Grapes, Giants, Grasshoppers, and God

Imagine with me, if you will, a transport full of troops landing on the battlefield. As they leap from the plane instead of running to engage the enemy they huddle together like a gaggle of terrified geese. Although they are well schooled soldierin warfare, fear has turned their hearts and knees to jello and they are unable to do what they were trained to do. We would wonder and shake our heads in astonishment at such a display of cowardice coming from trained warriors, and rightly so; who does that? But isn’t that what we as Christian warriors are wont to do? All too often the enemy’s growling roar sends us scrambling in terror to cower in a panicked knot of humanity, unable to engage the enemy as we were taught to do. Instead, like real soldiers, we need to boldly step out and run into the fray to drive back the enemy rather than shrink from him in fright.
