Psalm 23 is a very well known Psalm. Those familiar words “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want…” are a balm to the anxious soul. As with many things in life, however, familiarity can sometimes dull or obscure the rich meaning contained in a passage of scripture. It can be tempting to skip over “the Lord is my Shepherd” and go right to the “I shall not want” part that applies to us in whatever situation we may find ourselves. When we do that, though, we miss the One who does the giving and providing; the Shepherd is eclipsed by what He so graciously provides. Pastor Marlan challenges us in this week’s message to pause at the first part of that time honored phrase to consider our Shepherd rather than just the benefits of being one of His sheep.
